The Quality of Design and Work

An idea is formulated in my peanut brain. A “grocery” list is generated. Off I go to the local lumber mill or big box store to get the items necessary for the project. Back to the shop to unload. So goes the process before the work begins. I gather my thoughts and get to work.
While working, many thoughts go through my head and at the same time I find myself feeling clearer and more relaxed. The work is straightforward and useful. The job doesn’t feel like a job but more like an accomplishment. Taking pride in my work is something that really hits home. I would not want to send something out that I wasn’t proud of. This doesn’t even take into account what the end customer might think. Pride in my work. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

What I do…
I make wood products from soap savers to toy boxes, cutting boards and yard dice. Then I try to sell them. Etsy, local craft fairs, farmers markets and social media.
-
Take my hobby and turn it into a business.
-
Set up the business. Logo, website, social media. Build my inventory.
-
Get the word out. Let’s try to move some product!

“It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them.”
— Mark Twain

I work with a combination of hand tools and power tools. While I enjoy the approach of using solely hand tools, sometimes it just takes the right tool for the job. That may be a power tool. My work bench was made from 30 year old maple barn beams and new walnut from the local lumber mill. I made the bench with hand tools only. What an undertaking. Total respect for those that craft in this way. With that said, I could have made life a whole lot easier and faster by adding a little power to the project. Either way, I enjoy it and the product comes out great.
